Broke Estate Wines
The characteristics of Broke wines are quite distinct for instance, the Chardonnay tends to have more melon characters and Cabernets are of intense flavour and colour with good aging potential.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon, Moussant and Lacrima Angelorum - these are made in the tradition of the classic French styles. Through the entire viticultural process, from pruning to picking, the Broke Estate dedicated vines are treated with the utmost TLC. In the winery, that same care is continued and complemented with the very best of oak and winemaking principles.

Ryan Wines
Free Run Chardonnay and Single Vineyard Cabernets, were new concepts bought to the family table by the second generation. The idea was for more accessibly priced wines with contemporary packaging that are simple, delicious and ready to drink now - the definitive under promise/over deliver scenario. The first bottling of the Ryan range was 1,200 cases - a big move for a boutique vineyard that normally bottles no more than 700 cases of wine in total. With the success of that release - a sell-out in 5 months we aim to bottle as much as possible of the 250 tonne crush from our 2000 vintage. |

Broke Estate 2000 Chardonnay- WINEMAKER'S NOTES
Broke Estate 2000 Chardonnay
Growing
This wine was made from 100 per cent chardonnay harvested from our Broke Estate and Minimbah vineyards on February 28, 2000, at an average of 14.1ºBaumé. With its long, cool, dry spring and beautiful conditions throughout harvest, the 2000 vintage was one of the best ever in the Hunter Valley. Fruit was harvested in excellent condition and showing the rich varietal flavours associated with optimum ripeness.
Making
Various steps were taken to build complexity into this wine - 25 per cent barrel fermentation, 70 per cent malolactic fermentation, and maturation (with batonnage) on yeast lees. The wine was matured for 10 months in new and one-year-old Allier and Nevers oak prior to final blending and bottling (1000 dozen packaged in 2000 packs of six)
Analysis:
Alcohol 14.2%
pH 3.31
Total Acidity 7.05g/L
Residual Sugar 2.45g/L
Enjoying
The Broke Estate 2000 Chardonnay has a deep straw colour. The primary aromas are of stone fruits and melon, with butterscotch malolactic characters and oak providing a complexing background. The palate is well balanced, showing delicate, restrained fruit, excellent integration of oak and a creamy softness derived from malolactic fermentation. A combination of persistent fruit, low pH, high acid and high alcohol provide the structure to ensure that the wine has a cellaring potential of at least five years.
Show Record:
The wine has only been shown once, winning a gold medal at the 2000 Hunter Valley Wine Show.

Broke Estate 2001 Semillon - WINEMAKER'S NOTES
Broke Estate 2001 Semillon
Growing
This wine was made from 100 per cent semillon harvested from our Broke Estate vineyard on February 11, 2001, at an average of 11.4ºBaumé. With its long, cool, dry spring and warm, dry summer, the 2001 vintage was an excellent one for semillon in the Hunter Valley. Fruit was harvested in excellent condition and showing the rich varietal flavours associated with optimum ripeness.
Making
To help ensure the fineness of the style, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed and only the free-run juice included in the ferment which was temperature controlled to retain freshness and delicacy of flavour. The wine was bottle in July, 2000 (500 dozen).
Analysis:
Alcohol 11.2%
pH 3.25
Total Acidity 7.26g/L
Residual Sugar 2.12g/L
Enjoying
The Broke Estate 2001 Semillon is a pale straw colour with green tinges. It shows distinctive grassy, lemon-leaf, capsicum and gooseberry characters on the bouquet and palate, which is crisp and racy and finishes with a lingering citruslike acidity. The wine is drinking very well now but will also repay 5-7 years cellaring.

Broke Estate - 2003 Cabernets Sauvignon
Our flagship wine, winning more than one hundred trophies and medals over its nine year history, including intervin 1992 International Gold and NSW Best Red in 1997. 1998 was a fabulous vintage, producing a wine deep red in colour, intense Cabernet characters, lifted spice aromas and vanilla wood affectation, as a result of twelve months under new and one year old American and French oak. Produced at our Broke Vineyard, from ninety percent Cabernet Sauvignon and ten percent Cabernet Franc, the wine is recommended for medium to long term cellaring. Recognized as the benchmark in Hunter Valley Cabernet.

Broke
Estate 2003 Cabernets Sauvignon -
WINEMAKER'S NOTES
This single vineyard wine has been
made from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc grapes
harvested from the Broke Estate property. It displays an intense
deep red colour, aromatic varietal fruit with attractive underlying
oak. Maturation was in one and two year old oak, complementing
the blackcurrant fruit and adding length and roundness of
flavour. This Cabernet blend has attractive, accessible fruit
and while excellent drinking now, it will develop further
complexity, length and flavour with mid term cellaring of
5-10 years.
